After the first explosion went off on the 12th, 8 more happened over the course of the next few days. I’ve been to Tianjin – just like many other cities in China, Tianjin is a densely populated area. Thousands of people who were living, working or touring the area may have been affected by the blast.
Following the news, Mon Space Group contacted a number of agencies and business partners in China to see how we can help. We pledged to offer our support, including the provision of basic living necessities, donations & moral support. A few of us actually flew there the next day just to give care to those in need.
We then published our pledge not only to our friends & families, but also to our business partners, customers & corporate clients to help us gather more support for the incident.
One of the people who responded was Jackie Chan – a down to earth, caring and extremely nice person that I’ve had the honour of knowing. Together with Mon Space’s team, we gathered the donations and flew to Tianjin to deliver those RMB1 million (1 million Chinese Yuan) worth of donations in person to The Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation.
Technology today has evolved so much to make our society a safer place. Despite that, accidents often happen, and our efforts to improve everyone’s safety should be more than just talk. Every step involved in the process of industrial manufacturing, such as storage of flammables, chemicals, safety features of buildings and machineries, crisis management and so forth needs to be constantly improved and supervised. Not only are the staff subjected to serious danger if we omit safety precautions, we also risk the wellbeing of entire communities.
Take this incident for instance. The cause of the explosions was not immediately known at first, but an investigation later concluded that an overheated container of dry nitrocellulose was the cause of the initial explosion. Perhaps the tragedy could have been avoided if there were better enforcement of safety measures. Tianjin will be a constant reminder for all of us, including Mon Space Group, to be vigilant in safeguarding our staff and community.
The world mourns for the casualties of this explosion, and support those who survived and are in need, including their families, friends and relatives.
